Three UK and Neos Networks launch fibre test bed in London’s West End to serve business and the busiest retail street in Europe

  • Neos Networks

Neos Networks on track to deliver 50% of the underlying network to help enhance Three UK’s 4G and enable it to rollout the UK’s fastest 5G network in this area

LONDON, UK, 25 July 2019 Europe’s busiest shopping district is set to be used as a test zone for the UK’s fastest 5G network. London’s West End has been chosen as a prime location to trial the new technology by Three UK and Neos Networks. The two companies will run the fibre test bed as part of an ongoing connectivity collaboration programme.

As one of the most populated and highly visited regions in the city – home to Europe’s busiest retail road, Oxford Street, generating tens of millions of monthly visitors – the rollout of the UK’s fastest 5G network in this area of the capital, is a major development for London. The project will allow Three UK to add extra capacity to its 4G and 5G networks to offer customers in the proximity a faster, more reliable experience.

Jace Tyrrell, Chief Executive of New West End Company, which represents 600 businesses in London’s West End, said: “As the world’s leading retail & leisure destination, London’s West End is the ideal place to test the UK’s fastest 5G network. In order to retain its global status, the international centre must have the infrastructure and connectivity to support its businesses and the 200 million annual visitors to the area who expect it to be fully digitally equipped. The evolution of the retail sector prioritises unique customer experiences, and increasingly relies on new, frictionless and innovative technology. This deployment will enable consumers to connect and engage with retailers on a new level, and power sustainable growth across the West End”.

Nationwide availability of high capacity fibre is vital to the successful deployment of 5G, and last year Neos Networks outlined its most significant network investment project to date. The programme, known as ‘Edge 3’, will see the company unbundle 177 BT exchanges by 2020, allowing Neos Networks to deploy its own technology on BT’s infrastructure and add over 180,000 UK business post codes to its network reach. It underpins Mobile Network Operator (MNO) Three UK’s 4G enhancement, and 5G home broadband and mobile ambitions.

5G launch plans

Three UK will launch its first 5G sites offering home broadband this August in London, and extend to 25 other UK towns and cities before the end of the year. The communications provider will roll out its 5G broadband initially – supported by an innovative project by Neos Networks that sees part of its fibre network run through London’s Thames Water waste water network to enhance densification in a key metro area – 50% of which will be rolled out in summer 2019. Anticipating where 5G demand would surge, Neos Networks sought new, innovative routes to create a fibre network in a key location with faster deployment timescales than traditional digs. Neos Networks’ innovation won’t stop there, with teams exploring further creative opportunities to give MNO customers robust backhaul solutions.

The need for new fibre

The race to launch a reliable 5G offering is on but the importance of the underlying networks can’t be overlooked. Its speed, consistency and ubiquity is set to revolutionise consumer services, meaning downloads of HD films in minutes and enablement of future technology such connected cars, smart cities and medical devices could all be possible. However, the key requirement ahead of the launch of commercial 5G services is high-capacity fibre connectivity, which must provide fast, reliable and secure backhaul to core networks in order to be able to cope with the expected massive increase in data usage.

Sarah Mills, sector director for network operators said: “Ofcom data shows UK data usage is set to grow thirteen-fold between 2017 and 2025, this will be concentrated in metro city hotspots. Our high-capacity fibre ring in central London will link to Three UK’s cell sites using London’s water waste network. This innovative, secure and robust fibre installation is necessary to provide greater resiliency, increased capacity and reduced latency. Three UK is already utilising our unique and diverse backhaul connectivity, and we’re in a strong position to trial their 5G offering in one of Europe’s busiest areas, as well as enhancing existing services for their customers. However, our creative approach to networking won’t stop there, as we continue to bring further network innovation to the market over the coming months.”

Dave Dyson, Chief Executive Officer of Three UK: “Fibre is an essential component of any 5G network. Three UK is bringing the UK’s fastest 5G network to 25 towns and cities by the end of this year, as well as significantly enhancing its 4G network over the next few years. Neos Networks is a vital partner which is using innovative ways to stimulate much needed competition in the fibre backhaul market which will give customers the best experience for both mobile and home broadband services”.

“As the world’s leading retail & leisure destination, London’s West End is the ideal place to test the UK’s fastest 5G network.

New research shows telecoms industry must respond differently to the varying capacity needs of enterprises in London versus UK regional towns

LONDON, UK, 23 July 2019 Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading connectivity suppliers today shares research highlighting a disparity in the connectivity needs of London-based UK businesses versus businesses in regional towns. The insights show an expected growth of 88% in network demand that will come from London businesses in the next year, while the priority for regional businesses is to have access to on-net services. The findings come at a time when Neos Networks has made its latest and most significant network expansion investment to date, Edge 3, of which 60% is concentrated in the London area.

Over the next 18 months Neos Networks will unbundle 177 BT exchanges, accessing an additional 180,000 UK business postcodes. All 177 exchanges will have capacities of up to 100Gbps, meeting the demands for higher bandwidth and data. When surveyed, 25% of Service Providers revealed they plan to increase their networks up to 100Gbps from 2020. The first 51 exchanges are already on net, enabling Service Providers to increase their network reach and capacity. The new network roll-out prioritises the most densely populated metro city areas, including London, which supports the research findings that on-net capability is a key driver for Service Providers.

Regional businesses demand on-net connectivity

The research revealed a 20% increase in core network capacity demand from businesses in regional UK towns over the next two years. In response, Neos Networks is launching five geographically spread optical-enabled data centres, serving areas where on-net access is in high demand. These are:

  • Northampton (Node 4)
  • Milton Keynes (Pulsant)
  • Hemel (Gyron, Centro)
  • Stockley Park (Virtus 5)
  • Newport, Wales (Next Gen Data)

When examining what’s behind this surge in capacity demand from UK businesses, a vast majority of enterprises highlighted ‘a reduction in IT estate costs’ and an ‘increase in cloud adoption’ as the two most important drivers for their IT strategy for 2020 and beyond. The five data centres Neos Networks has brought on-net will enable enterprises to access public clouds directly, without the need to procure individual connections into each cloud provider. This makes it straightforward for enterprises to achieve their cloud adoption strategy through one supplier, no matter where they’re located.

Colin Sempill, Chief Executive, Neos Networks said: “We’re continually investing in our customers’ needs, providing the most robust services that their businesses require. Whether that’s increasing our connectivity footprint by deploying our five new optical-enabled data centres in high demand regional blackspots or investing to provide densification solutions for businesses in metro city areas like London”.

“As enterprises respond to emerging technology trends and with the rise of the Internet of Things, they’re relying on high capacity networks to fuel the future of Industry 4.0. Our recent network investment supports this by ensuring we’re in the best position to serve our customers both now and in the future”.

  • Neos Networks

Launch of Janet South network and extension of UK Backbone network partnerships will keep UK education & research facilities connected globally with speeds of up to 100Gbps

LONDON, UK, 30 April  2019 Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading connectivity suppliers, today announces a new critical network contract with digital solutions provider for the UK education sector, Jisc. A pre-existing contract between the two companies has also been significantly extended, developing the connectivity framework required to improve the support for education and research across the UK, and access to the global research and education network.

Neos Networks’ core fibre network will be utilised by Jisc’s UK ‘backbone network’ for a further nine years until 2028, enabling data-intensive research centres including The Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, and Imperial College London, access to significant bandwidth and speeds of up to 100Gbps.

As a result of the long-term success of the core backbone network, Jisc has chosen Neos Networks to refresh the Janet South network as part of the Jisc programme to develop a new Janet Network access infrastructure. The partnership will see seven BT exchanges unbundled and will utilise four existing Points of Presence to provide improved connectivity to 11 universities, including Southampton and Surrey, and 80 local colleges between Aldershot and Bournemouth. The seven-year deal is testament to the strong relationship the two companies enjoy.

By working closely together for almost 20 years, Jisc has been able to provide the critical connectivity required for a large number of UK education and research facilities, including access to CERN’s Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. These partnership developments will ensure Jisc has the continued support of Neos Networks’ award-winning and secure network for another decade. Neos Networks launches SD-WAN solution to revolutionise IT estate management in UK

  • Neos Networks

IT architecture holding back innovation in enterprises – 40% cite IT agility as an issue

LONDON, UK, 16 April 2019 Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading connectivity providers, and part of SSE Group, today announces the launch of its new SD-WAN solution, targeting UK enterprises. Legacy WAN (Wide Area Networking) has so far, relied on physical on-premise data centres, which weren’t built to manage today’s enterprises. Increased data usage and critical dependence on the cloud has turned businesses on their heads and forced network managers to reconsider their network infrastructure. With SD-WAN, Neos Networks will give IT teams unprecedented visibility and central control over their IT estate, from which enterprise IT managers can benefit from increased agility – quickly and securely connecting branch users to applications via any underlying network without compromise.

Increasingly, businesses need real-time visibility of their network estate, and tools to optimise it. The lack of visibility – experienced by around half of IT decision makers – means businesses could be paying for bandwidth they don’t need and could be making use of expensive, resilient links that usually lie dormant waiting for failure. Neos Networks’ SD-WAN will give IT managers a central view of their IT estate and empower them to optimise traffic routes to critical applications. It will spot opportunities to enhance visibility, speed, flexibility and security.

Neos Networks is collaborating with two market-leading brands, utilising market-leading technology to deliver its SD-WAN solution: enterprise network technology expert Silver Peak, and specialist network systems integrator Axians. Both bring extensive SD-WAN knowledge and experience.

Why do businesses need to transform their networks?

WAN technology has remained unmoved for the best part of three decades. Traditional WAN architecture is increasingly unable to keep up with the demands of the digital workplace, however Neos Networks’ SD-WAN will bring agility by minimising the need for expensive routing hardware and improving business connectivity between branch locations, the head office, and the cloud.
Neos Networks’ SD-WAN solution can be offered flexibly, in line with the changing procurement demands of many modern businesses. The tool will enable network managers to deliver higher levels of application performance, directly supporting organisations on a digital transformation journey.

“We’re delighted to be partnering with Silver Peak and Axians to launch our very own SD-WAN solution”, said Stephen Lawrence, Sector Director for Enterprise, Neos Networks. “It’s the next natural step in offering true digital transformation to UK enterprises. For us, SD-WAN is about providing a holistic view of an IT estate, having a secure and private network, enabling integrity, and a better end-user experience of application performance and availability, all whilst maximising uptime and benefitting from the efficiencies achieved”.

The partnership Neos Networks selected, with Axians and technology partner Silver Peak, will support their relentless focus on customer satisfaction and delivering service excellence. The company currently maintains an external NPS score of +22.

Allan Paton, Sales Director, UK & Ireland, Silver Peak said: “At Silver Peak, we’re proud to be recognised for developing a business-driven WAN edge platform that is globally acknowledged for its quality. Neos Networks’ impeccable customer service reputation makes them the ideal partner for future SD-WAN projects in a cloud-dependent world. Currently, there’s a big push for service providers to focus on opening up the network to improve business functionality and we’re pleased to collaborate to lead that initiative with our award-winning business-first SD-WAN technology.”

“There has never been a more exciting time than now when it comes to SD-WAN in the UK, and we’re proud to be working with connectivity market experts Neos Networks.” Said Chris Gilmour, CTO of Service Provider and Enterprise, Axians UK “Axians know that legacy enterprise networks are inefficient for today’s traffic, where requirements place a need on accessing cloud-hosted applications from any branch; traditional backhaul adds latency which impairs cloud application performance. The work Axians are doing with Neos Networks combined with Silver Peaks’ leading-edge technology shows that businesses can optimise the availability of clouds services in an agile and cost-effective way.”

“It’s the next natural step in offering true digital transformation to UK enterprises”.

Neos Networks debuts cost-saving fibre broadband backhaul product for ISPs

  • Neos Networks

New Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) backhaul product will use ‘virtual unbundling’ to provide access to over 700 exchanges in key business areas

LONDON, UK, 09 April, 2019 Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading connectivity suppliers, and part of SSE plc – today launches a transformative solution for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to quickly improve their business and consumer broadband services, called Scalefast FTTC. Service providers (SPs), particularly ISPs with a fibre broadband offering or those seeking one, avoid the heavy costs of unbundling BT Openreach exchanges directly and instead virtually unbundle them leveraging Neos Networks’ existing footprint. Neos Networks will provide the data backhaul and offer a flexible usage-based billing model. Business and consumer broadband providers will retain control, keeping their direct relationship with BT Openreach and maintaining buying power.

The product is one of the first of its kind, and new to market, with a financially viable usage-based billing model, making it attractive in both the short and long-term. ISPs will benefit from the significant reduction to the CAPEX investment that direct unbundling involves. This speedier route to accessing exchanges also means businesses can test new regions more quickly. ISPs could be taking live customer orders within three months versus potentially longer time frames.

Scalefast FTTC will allow ISPs to utilise Neos Networks’ extensive network, expanding their footprint nationwide. Consumer and business broadband providers will be able to offer a resilient and business-grade network to their customers, whilst still controlling oversubscription, as multiple NNIs can be procured to contend with traffic.

UK network investment

Neos Networks has been steadily investing in its network through its expansion programme termed ‘Project Edge’. The latest phase, coined ‘Edge 3’, is made up of 177 BT Exchanges being unbundled in the coming year. Once the expansion plans are complete, Scalefast FTTC will offer virtually unbundled access to 733 exchanges, made up of 179 parent exchanges and 554 child exchanges.

Colin Sempill, Managing Director, Neos Networks explains: “Scalefast FTTC is a solution that gives customers the ability to virtually unbundle BT Openreach exchanges at very little capital or operational cost. We’re able to roll out this disruptive solution due to our ability to deliver competitive reach and pricing thanks to our Edge expansion programme and our continued commitment to connectivity excellence. With this high capacity core network and backhaul, businesses and consumers will be better-placed to utilise FTTC broadband services via ISPs”.

The partnership centres around the use of Neos Networks’ fibre ring – where a proportion of the network is located in the Thames Water waste water network – to significantly enhance Three UK and O2’s connectivity backhaul capabilities and pave the way for further 4G and 5G deployment by connecting cell sites and masts.

A need for new fibre

The speed, consistency and ubiquity of 5G is expected to revolutionise consumer services, allowing for near-instant downloads of HD films, while underpinning next-generation technology enhancements such as connected cars, smart medical devices and smart cities. To make 5G a reality, deep, robust aggregation of fronthaul and backhaul access is necessary in order to provide greater resiliency, increase capacity and reduce latency.

The key requirement ahead of the launch of commercial 5G services is high capacity fibre connectivity, which must provide fast, reliable and secure backhaul to core networks, in order to be able to cope with the expected massive increase in data usage: according to Ofcom, UK data usage is set to grow thirteen-fold between 2017 and 2025.

Next generation mobile services are expected to begin in the UK in the second half of 2019 when the first 5G capable devices are released by manufacturers.

Why sewers could be the key to 5G

Following a deal struck in 2017, Neos Networks is licensed to lay fibre optic cables throughout Thames Water’s waste water network. Following the need for more pervasive networks, Neos Networks has sought new, innovative routes to create new fibre networks in key locations at a lower cost and with faster deployment times than traditional digs.

The agreement with Three UK and O2 will see approximately 100 points of connectivity exit from this central London sewer network via two BT Exchanges. By partnering with Neos Networks, Three UK and O2 can operate their own Central London Area (CLA) network, while also accessing spare fibre ducts for future initiatives in London.

“Networks will fundamentally underpin the UK’s digital economy and will be essential to 5G services” said Colin Sempill, Managing Director of Neos Networks. “With this high capacity core in the London sewers, Three UK and O2 are tapping into our unique, diverse connectivity and putting their networks in a strong position to trial 5G offerings, while enhancing existing services for their customers.”

Dave Dyson, Chief Executive Officer of Three UK added, “New and innovative models are essential to improving the customer experience of mobile networks by increasing the availability of dark fibre for mobile backhaul and driving competition in the market. Our partnership with Neos Networks and O2 is one of the first examples of using existing infrastructure to improve connectivity in an urban area.”

Brendan O’Reilly, Chief Technology Officer of O2 shared: “This kind of agreement is essential to allow for continued investment and improvement of services for our customers. This partnership is a great example of Neos Networks, Three UK and O2 coming together in a collaborative and innovative way to address the growing challenge and pressure of obtaining access to fibre for mobile backhaul in the UK”

“Networks will fundamentally underpin the UK’s digital economy and will be essential to 5G services. With this high capacity core in the London sewers, Three UK and O2 are tapping into our unique, diverse connectivity and putting their networks in a strong position to trial 5G offerings, while enhancing existing services for their customers.”

Neos Networks to unbundle 177 BT exchanges to enhance UK business connectivity

  • Neos Networks

Three UK will be first to use the enhanced network to underpin its 5G ambitions, while the project will bring over 180,000 new UK business postcodes into play for Neos Networks

LONDON, UK, 09 July 2018 Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading connectivity suppliers, and part of SSE Group, has today announced details of a major project to unbundle 177 BT exchanges, to meet the significant demand for high-capacity fibre connectivity amongst UK businesses. The project, which will be rolled out over the next two years, is due to double Neos Networks’ network reach by unlocking a further 180,000 business postcodes across the UK, as the company cements its commitment to the UK’s digital ambitions.

The roll-out is a significant investment in its own network by Neos Networks, with customers, prospects, MNOs – such as Three UK – and service providers all set to benefit from the enhanced network footprint.

By unbundling the exchanges, Neos Networks will effectively futureproof its offering with a network capable of delivering 100Gbps services. With this high capacity core network and backhaul provided by Neos Networks businesses will be better-placed to utilise fibre-to-the-premise and broadband services not currently feasible in the UK, which is amongst the worst in Europe for broadband speeds. The unbundling project places Neos Networks as one of only a handful of dedicated UK connectivity providers seeking to assist the government’s aim of “encouraging the market towards ubiquitous ultrafast services” through its own investment.

“We have always placed great pride in our network and ensuring that it is in the best possible shape to serve our customers both now and in the future,” said Colin Sempill, Managing Director of Neos Networks. “Legacy networks are coming under more strain as the demands placed on them potentially outweigh their capabilities. This rollout will guarantee 100Gbps services, putting the UK on the front foot to be a pioneering digital economy and making use of new technologies like 5G. Networks will underpin the connected society that many anticipate with 5G.”

Three UK has signed a deal with Neos Networks to use the connectivity from the 177 unbundled exchanges, following the recent announcement that Neos Networks is supporting its network expansion goals, including the anticipated rollout of 5G.

A key component for the launch of 5G services is high capacity fibre connectivity, which must provide reliable ultrafast backhaul to the core networks and masts. This will in turn need to increase ten-fold as the UK prepares for 5G. It will be substantially different than current 4G technology – potentially a thousand times faster – and will operate on significantly higher frequency with much larger bandwidths. Neos Networks has been selected by Three UK to deliver the required high capacity fibre connectivity between Three UK’s core data centres and the BT exchanges as it prepares for a 5G network rollout and improving 4G services. Three UK’s use of the 177 exchanges is the first of several potential unbundling phases.

“We’re dedicated to investing in our network to deliver the services our consumers want,” said Bryn Jones, Chief Technology Officer at Three UK. “High capacity networks will be the foundation on which 5G is built. We’re partnering with Neos Networks as their commitment to our requirements and the UK’s digital economy were clear from the outset.”

In unbundling the exchanges, Neos Networks is expanding the reach available to UK businesses and service providers, while ensuring greater reliability of performance at a more competitive price point, as there will be less reliance on incumbents. Batches of the new exchanges will be released over a two-year period and will eventually be available to quote and order via Neos Networks’ online price comparison engine, LIVEQUOTE.

“We’re dedicated to investing in our network to deliver the services our consumers want, high capacity networks will be the foundation on which 5G is built. We’re partnering with Neos Networks as their commitment to our requirements and the UK’s digital economy were clear from the outset.”

Neos Networks counters DFA ruling with innovative ‘fibre in the sewers’ Thames Water partnership

  • Neos Networks

The agreement will allow networks to be created up to 10 times faster; more directly and securely, in key business areas such as the City of London using the waste water network.

London, UK, 14 November 2017 Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading connectivity suppliers, and part of SSE plc – today announced that it has signed an ‘operating licence to deploy’ agreement with Thames Water, enabling the distribution of Neos Networks’ fibre optic cables throughout Thames Water’s waste water network. The deal comes as Neos Networks seeks new, innovative routes to expand its footprint.

A consequence of the recent Dark Fibre Access (DFA) ruling – that rival providers will not be able to access BT Openreach’s existing fibre optic cables to increase competition and end user services – has meant that Neos Networks has sought new and creative ways to enable connectivity.

Tapping into waste water networks

Traditionally, telecoms networks have been created and expanded through civil construction ‘digs’, that involve laying cables just below the surface – a costly, time-intensive and disruptive way of establishing new connections. By utilising Thames Water’s already existing waste water system, Neos Networks will be able to reduce network deployment costs by 60% and deploy connectivity services up to 10 times faster than through traditional digs.

Through the partnership, Neos Networks will be able to establish a more physically secure network. Thames Water’s network sits as deep as 10 metres underground, making it much less susceptible to tampering or inadvertent outages, compared to conventional digs, in which telecommunications cable is laid as shallow as 12 inches below ground level. Laying fibre services deeper below the surface ensures the network is less vulnerable to accidental fibre breaks.

As utility companies, with common values of security and reliability, the partnership also underpins Neos Networks and Thames Water’s aim to deliver excellent customer services.

“Businesses fundamentally rely on their network to underpin everyday operations,” said Mike Magee, Director of Service Solutions at Neos Networks. “With an ever-increasing demand for connectivity, network infrastructures require higher resiliency and improved diversity. Estimates suggest there are as many as 3,000 enterprises in the finance and insurance sectors in the City of London area alone, each vying for connectivity. This has made the demand for unique, truly diverse network routes hard to achieve. We’ve identified a way to solve this by leveraging the waste water network”.

Unique routing and a bespoke offering

The geographic spread of Thames Water’s waste water network means that Neos Networks is well-positioned to offer bespoke, customer-driven network build-outs to leading risk-averse businesses in London and further afield.

“With the sensitive information that large businesses and financial services firms hold, coupled with regulatory pressures, networks must be secure and robust. But it shouldn’t be forgotten that network deployment is about competitive advantage – being able to provide a guaranteed, instant customer experience is no longer a ‘nice to have’. As technology changes and new innovations are released, it is essential that networks can cope with increased capacity requirements and have the ability to easily scale their connectivity services to meet this need. Our ‘operating licence to deploy’ with Thames Water allows us to be one of few to genuinely fit the sector’s needs” said Magee.

The deal also allows Thames Water to utilise its existing infrastructure without any disruption to general operations, while meeting EU and UK guidelines and helping to support the UK’s digital strategy. A section of the European Commission’s Digital Single Market Directive on access to existing physical infrastructure recommends that making use of all relevant and available physical infrastructure for the roll-out of communication networks will enhance efficiencies, minimise costs and accelerate the deployment of connectivity.

“Our Victorian sewers are already home to a number of pipes and cables belonging to other utility companies and we’re glad to also now be supporting Neos Networks,” said Richard Hill, Head of Property, Thames Water. “Reducing roadworks and traffic congestion is something hugely important to us, so it’s great to help a fellow utility company do the same by allowing them to make use of our existing infrastructure.”

In recent years, Neos Networks has made significant investment in its UK-wide network. This ensures that the company is strategically placed to connect both densely populated and remote sites. Neos Networks recently announced the third phase of its network expansion programme, Project Edge, which brings the total number of exchanges served by its national fibre network to 140, with 300,000 prime business postcodes served.

“Businesses fundamentally rely on their network to underpin everyday operations. With an ever-increasing demand for connectivity, network infrastructures require higher resiliency and improved diversity. Estimates suggest there are as many as 3,000 enterprises in the finance and insurance sectors in the City of London area alone, each vying for connectivity. This has made the demand for unique, truly diverse network routes hard to achieve. We’ve identified a way to solve this by leveraging the waste water network.”
