Jisc selects Neos Networks for new gigabit fibre network serving North-West England

  • Neos Networks

Partnership will help connect region’s major Universities and Research Centres to new gigabit-capable fibre network

Network offers up to 100Gbps connections and ten-fold increases

LONDON, UK, 18th January 2022

Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading business connectivity providers, today confirmed that it had been chosen by Jisc – suppliers of a digital network and supporting services for the UK’s higher education and research sector – to deliver a new Dark Fibre network spanning the North-West of the UK.

The new network will replace Jisc’s existing Janet North network which currently serves the region. It will provide gigabit capability to all the sites using the new network, with some seeing a ten-fold speed increase compared to their current offering and all achieving high-capacity speeds up to 100Gbps.

The contract was awarded following a competitive tendering process and is the latest instalment in Jisc’s ongoing overhaul and rationalisation of 15 regional networks connected into the organisation’s national backbone infrastructure.

As well as this latest North-West network contract, Neos has previously secured the contracts to upgrade and merge two Midlands networks into one new high-speed, high-capacity network, and also the contract covering Jisc’s South of England network. Supported by its aggressive programme to unbundle BT exchanges across the country, these agreements cement Neos’s position as Jisc’s primary network communications provider.

For Neos, Joanne Green, SD, Public Sector and Transport said: “Our relationship with Jisc goes back some 20 years and we are very pleased to take on this latest rebuild to significantly upgrade the Janet network in the North-West of England. Traffic on the network continues to grow exponentially, and the new gigabit fibre capability will ensure that Jisc stays ahead of the requirement in terms of speed, capacity and future growth for its member universities, colleges and research centres.”

The North-West is one of Jisc’s busiest regional centres serving more than 150 sites across the region including large universities in Manchester, Liverpool and Lancaster, numerous colleges, and major research establishments such as Jodrell Bank, and the Science & Technology Facilities Council laboratory at Daresbury, which is the central point for handling data arriving in the UK from the Hadron Collider in CERN’s Switzerland laboratory.

Jeremy Sharp, Chief Technology Officer at Jisc, said the new network was a crucial step forward within a changing communications environment. “The network will play a key role in the ongoing shift to the hybrid learning environment, as well as the greater dependence on cloud-based resources that is being experienced across the higher education sector.

“Importantly,” Sharp added, “as a publicly funded body, this agreement helps future proof our network, provides 5G backhaul capability for our members, and ensures we can deliver value for money not only to our member organisations, but also to those commercial customers that seek access to our services.”

Deployment of the network will begin immediately and Jisc expects it to begin offering services to member institutions as early as the third quarter of 2022.

In recent weeks Neos has announced the completion of its Project Edge programme, unbundling over 270 exchanges in key business areas across the UK and extending their national reach to 550 BT exchanges to further improve availability of its nationwide fibre network. In addition, it has also recently announced a major programme to offer direct access to its network in key metropolitan centres including Liverpool and Manchester in the North-West. Jisc is already confirmed as its first customer to benefit from the Liverpool access network.

Neos Networks was formerly a division of the national energy provider SSE. It has built a strong reputation for its nationwide, high-capacity fibre network, and has focused solely on serving businesses, public sector organisations, and critical national infrastructure providers with essential, reliable, connectivity for more than 20 years.

Neos Networks brings broadband upgrades for public services across Oxfordshire

  • Neos Networks
Internet connection with optical fiber. Concept of fast internet

Will connect 200+ public service sites across Oxfordshire in a bid to improve digital and social inclusion

Contract will see Neos Networks aggregate suppliers to build, manage, and operate new infrastructure

LONDON, UK, 14th December 2021In a bid to improve connectivity and digital inclusion across the county, Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading business connectivity providers, has been selected by Oxfordshire County Council to build full fibre gigabit capable broadband infrastructure to a range of public sector and local authority sites in the region, including schools, libraries, county council buildings, GP surgeries, fire stations, leisure centres, community centres and museums. As part of a 20-year deal, Neos will work with Openreach, Virgin Media Business and locally based Gigaclear.

The project is funded with a £5m investment from Oxfordshire County Council and circa £2m investment from the Government’s DCMS GigaHubs project, part of Project Gigabit. The GigaHubs project provides a footprint of rural full fibre that will incentivise broadband providers to connect surrounding homes and businesses to next generation speeds.

Oxford regional network map

Currently 98.4% of Oxfordshire has access to superfast broadband, however this initiative will significantly improve connectivity for over 200 buildings which provide a public service, many of which are located in rural locations where fibre connectivity is both difficult to facilitate and expensive to provision. Neos will manage the implementation with the first phase of the programme set to be delivered by March 2022. This marks the first majority council-funded project aimed at improving the service offering available at community centres and village halls whilst also offering a more cost-effective connectivity solution for public sector sites.

Julia Lopez, Digital Infrastructure Minister said: “This huge government-funded deal for Oxfordshire will mean better public services that deliver more for communities and faster rollout of better broadband for surrounding homes and businesses. Upgrading schools, hospitals, libraries and other public buildings is just one way our £5 billion Project Gigabit scheme is levelling up the UK, with thousands of rural homes and businesses set to receive the fastest, most resilient connections available. This is not just about fantastic internet speeds but about future-proofing homes and businesses for a world in which technology plays an increasingly important role, from healthcare and education to industrial application.”

The project builds on Oxfordshire’s wider commitment to improve connectivity across the county through its Digital Infrastructure Programme. It will enable Oxfordshire County Council to realise its ambitions for equipping community centres to become ‘community working hubs’ offering enhanced community services, health and social care support, and reducing the need for people to travel further afield to access these services. This will in turn help the county council in meeting its objective for net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. Additionally, the new infrastructure will allow the council to migrate to lower cost fast broadband connections for its office buildings.

Councillor Glynis Phillips, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Corporate Services, commented:

“This is an exciting time for Oxfordshire. We are putting a lot of time and resource into ensuring that we are one of the best-connected counties in the UK. This project strengthens our commitment to our Digital Infrastructure strategy and to improving local access to services, reducing the need to travel. We particularly look forward to finding ways to maximise the range of services that will be enabled in Oxfordshire’s vibrant community centres and village halls where collaboration with parish, district, and the county council will be key alongside our colleagues in the NHS”.

Neos was awarded the contract following a competitive procurement process, due to its ability to aggregate and manage multiple broadband suppliers to deliver the best and most cost-effective solution to Oxfordshire County Council. In doing so, Neos will leverage existing infrastructure as well as delivering entirely new full fibre connectivity to the sites in scope. In addition to driving the delivery of gigabit services for the council and its stakeholders, the new infrastructure will also encourage the build of FTTP services by AltNets in the region.

“We are delighted to be working with Neos Networks and its suppliers on this project,” said Craig Bower, Oxfordshire County Council’s Digital Infrastructure Team Programme Director. “This project builds on the success of our superfast intervention programme, with the county council investment being entirely sourced from the take-up gainshare funds accrued from our recently completed ‘Better Broadband for Oxfordshire’ contract with Openreach.”

Jess Tweedie, Headteacher at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School said: “We are developing our school’s technology provision and the use of ICT and online platforms and are investing in devices as a tool in the classroom. This hopefully will enrich and enhance our curriculum as well as the efficiency of work with staff. We would also like to host more online parents’ events to support our community who largely work at the hospital and can find it difficult to attend meetings in person. Our current internet can only just cope with this and there is often buffering when many of us are in online at the same time, so having access to full fibre broadband will be a huge benefit.”

Commenting on the new deal, Colin Sempill, CEO at Neos Networks, said: “We’re excited to be working alongside Oxfordshire County Council to deliver the next stage in their connectivity strategy. Councils up and down the UK are having to deal with sub-par connectivity, particularly in more rural locations. In building and deploying this new fibre infrastructure, we’re able to provide Oxfordshire County Council with an important core fibre network that will bring new digital services to its premises, as well as to the homes of many across the county in the near future.”

Neos was formerly a division of the national energy provider SSE. It has built a strong reputation for its nationwide, high capacity fibre network, and today works with a number of businesses and public sector organisations, Neos was most recently appointed by local authorities in Perth & Kinross and Aberdeenshire for their connectivity deployments.

Neos Networks completes major stage of network expansion programme

  • Neos Networks

Hits target of 550 unbundled BT exchanges on schedule

Confirms plans to continue expansion and boost local access networks

LONDON, UK, November 30 2021 Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading business connectivity providers, today confirmed it has completed a major stage of its ambitious Project Edge network expansion programme. The company said it has hit the target of unbundling some 550 BT exchanges before the end of 2021, bringing up to 100Gbps high capacity fibre connectivity within reach of almost 750,000 business postcodes across the length and breadth of mainland UK.

Today’s announcement will see the company reach a full fibre footprint of more than 34,000km before the end of the year, an achievement that will help underpin the UK Government’s target for full fibre, gigabit connectivity to 85% of UK premises by 2025.

The company’s Project Edge network expansion programme is also designed to help facilitate the roll-out of a new wave of advanced 5G services for Three UK’s mobile network.

Colin Sempill, CEO of Neos Networks, hailed the company’s achievement of hitting the unbundling target but said there would be no let-up in its expansion plans.

“We’ve hit our 2021 target slightly ahead of schedule and that represents a great leap forward for our company and our vision to be the premier supplier of B2B focused infrastructure in the UK. But it cannot stop there, and Project Edge will continue to reach out to help UK businesses access full fibre, high-speed, high-capacity connectivity on their doorsteps.

“During 2022 I would expect the number of unbundled BT exchanges to continue to climb towards 700, and we will also look to target last-mile fibre connectivity in key regional business hubs,” he added.

In the last year, Neos confirmed that it had unbundled more than 300 BT exchanges in order to hit its target, despite the complexities and challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic and periods of national lockdown. The company’s substantial UK network is well-known for the quality and reliability of its services, designed to improve and enhance connectivity for its business customers—including wholesalers, network operators, AltNets, and ISPs, as well as a wide range of public sector organisations and enterprises.

All the unbundled exchanges will be available via the company’s LIVEQUOTE portal which provides prospective customers with a quoting, ordering and price comparison service matching its own network against leading third-party offerings.

Neos provides its services to businesses directly or through its network of resellers and partners. The company’s wholesale offering provides extremely price-competitive fibre, ethernet, optical wavelengths and internet services, with a promise of quicker delivery, greatly improved speeds and significantly higher capacity guarantees compared to existing suppliers.

Expansion into Blackpool landing station enables Neos Networks to better facilitate high capacity fibre connectivity

  • Neos Networks

Network access point will enable Irish businesses to connect into Blackpool and onwards throughout the United Kingdom, taking advantage of Neos Networks’ expansive 24,480+km UK wide network, while also bringing high-capacity connectivity to West Lancashire

LONDON, UK, 8th September Neos Networks, one of the UK’s premier connectivity providers, today announces significant network expansion across Lancashire. The UK telco is set to bring high-capacity connectivity services to the area and help create a gateway between Ireland and Blackpool for hyperscalers and international businesses looking to access fibre connectivity across the UK and beyond.

The news comes as independent Trans-Atlantic subsea connectivity provider, Aqua Comms, approaches completion of its Dublin to Blackpool sub-sea cabling connectivity project CeltixConnect-2 (CC-2). Neos Networks is acquiring a number of sub-ducts that connect Blackpool’s landing station directly into its 24,480+km UK network via a 30km Dark Fibre pathway, creating greater capacity and routing options for the Blackpool region.

The Dark Fibre connection across the Irish Sea will provide businesses the ability to route their traffic into and across the UK via Neos Networks’ expansive footprint and then on into their desired European or global location.

The project is perfect for hyperscalers and large content providers looking to utilise diverse and resilient networks, as well as offer greater choice to their customers. With connectivity backhaul into the UK telco’s network, these organisations will also have access to a single, end-to-end connectivity supplier to meet the entirety of their UK connectivity needs, reducing costly and inefficient multi-partner relationships, whilst also facilitating a connection between Trans-Atlantic routes for those with global connectivity requirements.

The announcement comes as Neos Networks continues to extend its network reach across the UK by growing its significant fibre core network to strategic landing stations, critical for those looking to extend from the UK into mainland Europe. The telco is also nearing completion of its network investment programme, Project Edge, which sees the business more than double its footprint by the end of the calendar year, unbundling 550 BT exchanges, making it one of the fastest growing network providers in the UK.

Sarah Mills, Managing Director for Wholesale and Smart Infrastructure at Neos Networks said: “Aqua Comms’ new CC-2 subsea cable system into Blackpool has opened up a number of exciting connectivity possibilities, not just locally but across the UK, Ireland and through to Europe. Extending Neos Networks’ core network as a Dark Fibre route via Preston into this region, enables us to offer hyperscalers direct access into the UK’s national fibre infrastructure, and on into the data centres of mainland Europe. Neos Networks will also enable digitisation for Lancashire industry, as we enhance our capability to deliver enterprise-grade connectivity services to the local businesses and organisations in the area.”

Nigel Bayliff, CEO Aqua Comms said: “We’re delighted that Neos Networks, one of the UK’s most trusted and fast-growing telcos, is making the most of our infrastructure, creating UK-wide routes for the hyperscaler market, while improving the connectivity options available to local businesses.

The work they have undertaken with their Dark Fibre network showcases how a connectivity provider can maximise the value of our duct, connecting the UK with European and cross-Atlantic data streams helping to create advanced digital networks.”

Neos Networks transforms Perth & Kinross Council’s infrastructure with the completion of its DCMS-funded Local Full Fibre Network project

  • Neos Networks

Delivery achieved significantly ahead of schedule, despite the need to navigate challenges such as the pandemic, to help underpin the region’s digital future

London, UK, 17 August 2021: Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading B2B connectivity providers, partly owned by SSE Group, has announced the completion of its DCMS funded Local Full Fibre Network project in Perth, Scotland, ahead of schedule. The fibre network connecting three key Council data centres and 31 public buildings and community establishments within Perth was completed two months ahead of the scheduled completion date at the end of September.

Spanning 19.5km, the new end-to-end full fibre network covers city centre locations, including educational institutions, council buildings, leisure centres and sheltered housing, as well as key public buildings such as Perth fire station and the CCTV monitoring centre. It stretches out to the west of the city, close to the new 3,000-home Perth West housing development.

Perth and Kinross Council awarded Neos Networks the major gigabit-capable connectivity project in November 2020, with the goal of facilitating next generation technologies such as 5G and Internet of Things (IoT), crucial to futureproofing businesses in the area and the local community.

The full fibre network deployed by Neos Networks, the second alongside another successful project in Aberdeenshire, now underpins significant infrastructure within the region and was completed ahead of schedule, in July 2021.

Forming part of Wave 3 of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Local Full Fibre Network programme, the project received £1m of funding from UK Government and was supported by Council and Building Digital UK (BD-UK) officials from procurement through to completion. The project also utilised just under half a million pounds of UK Government funding allocated to the Tay Cities Deal for digital projects as a local contribution.

The Neos Networks delivery team was required to connect buildings close to an existing 10km duct network owned by the Council, and used for traffic lights and CCTV, utilising existing SSE duct and building new duct where necessary. Neos Networks encountered numerous challenges throughout the project, including adverse weather and the COVID-19 pandemic. Issues with existing Council duct infrastructure also emerged. For example, technical concerns identified during early surveys, resulted in a month’s redesign work, which was undertaken in just two weeks.

Alternative solutions that were just as cost efficient, environmentally friendly and minimally disruptive as those in the initial plan were identified and implemented at pace. One example was Neos Networks’ use of existing council duct across the Queen’s Bridge, initially designed for CCTV and traffic light systems, to deliver the full fibre cable across the River Tay without laying new ducts reducing costs, saving time and minimising disruption.

Now the network is fully installed and ready for operations scheduled for the end of September, the connectivity provider will help serve Council buildings and the local community for the next 20 years, under IRU agreements between the Council and Neos Networks, futureproofing the region against the ever-growing demands of the digital economy.

Aside from the direct benefits of connectivity, the project is supporting the local economy through investment, government driven initiatives and schools training programmes to deliver connectivity to rural communities, helping bridge the social divide.

Joanne Green, Sales Director for Public Sector at Neos Networks said: “The importance of effective collaboration and constant customer contact has been key to the success of this project. Working in conjunction with Perth & Kinross Council has been outstanding and is a prime example of how public sector bodies and service providers can work in partnership to transform society and secure a gigabit-capable digital future for the community. The joint effort from everybody involved has helped us complete the project on time and to a high standard. We are all very excited to see the benefits that our deployed full fibre connectivity can bring to the region.”

Councillor Murray Lyle Leader of Perth & Kinross Council added: “We are delighted with the work that Neos Networks has carried out and fully believe the benefits it brings will transform the city and surrounding communities. The team were not only flexible and adaptable across the many challenges faced, but they also met all our requirements delivering on budget and ahead of schedule, providing our local buildings and community with the connectivity they need.”

Matt Warman MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for digital infrastructure stated: “I’m delighted that this game-changing gigabit network in Perth has now been completed thanks to funding from the UK government.

“Across Scotland we’re busy upgrading hundreds of hospitals, schools, libraries and other public buildings to gigabit broadband and will soon be announcing more areas that will benefit from our record £5 billion fund to connect hard-to-reach homes and businesses.”

Neos Networks strengthens Ethernet network expansion programme with CityFibre agreement

  • Neos Networks

Continued regional expansion will see Neos Networks add nine additional urban areas to its expansive network, providing customers with greater optionality and flexibility

LONDON, UK, 5 August 2021 – Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading connectivity providers, today announces a continuation of its partnership with CityFibre, expanding its network footprint and bringing greater connectivity opportunities to a further nine UK cities.

The cities set to benefit from the announcement include Cambridge, Cheltenham, Coventry, Derby, Gloucester, Huddersfield, Peterborough, Southend and Swindon, with the connectivity deployments set to also help futureproof the UK’s digital infrastructure as a whole.

The partnership means Neos Networks customers will have access to business-grade Ethernet connectivity on the CityFibre network, ensuring its customers have greater optionality and flexibility when selecting last-mile providers. The nine cities will join the 15 CityFibre regions made available in 2019, with all available to quote and order via Neos Networks price comparison tool LIVEQUOTE. The recent investment in the LIVEQUOTE portal provides Neos Networks customers better transparency when selecting a last-mile service provider as well as clear visibility of third-party availability for local access points. As of today, two of the nine cities are available to start quoting; Cambridge and Swindon, with the additional seven cities due for completion within the next month.

As UK businesses strive to recover following the impact of the ongoing pandemic, continued digital transformation is seen as a necessity to meet the growing demands of the digital world. For businesses across these new cities, the network expansion will help to support such digital projects by facilitating the roll out of high capacity, reliable full fibre networks, offering increased access to support business growth and economic recovery.

By onboarding the additional nine CityFibre cities, Neos Networks can continue its work in supporting businesses across the nation to access highly reliable connectivity services to support their digital agendas. Both enterprises and wholesalers across the UK will gain more choice and visibility for reliable, high capacity and secure connectivity solutions. The continued expansion ensures Neos Networks offers a vast number of interconnects and wider access to its network for customers in often overlooked regions of the UK.

In addition to the CityFibre agreement, Neos Networks is already well on the way to delivering its target of more than doubling the number of exchanges on its own network, up to 550 exchanges by the end of 2021. Supporting its ambitions to offer premium quality connectivity to the nation, many of these exchanges will provide 100Gbps high capacity options and 10Gbps Ethernet connectivity as standard. The enhancement of its network footprint will also result in an additional 10,000km of fibre network for the company.

Enterprises and wholesalers are also increasingly demanding easier ways to procure national Ethernet services. While connectivity can be complex, it doesn’t have to be; by offering customers the choice of provider with flexibility and optionality through the LIVEQUOTE pricing portal, Neos Networks aims to simplify business connectivity needs, providing intelligent network solutions for its customers. Neos Networks’ LIVEQUOTE tool also supports the launch of Ethernet over FTTx (EoFTTx), one of the first new products live under the Neos Networks name, meaning customers continue to have an expanding range of both competitive network suppliers and technology to choose from.

Sarah Mills, MD for Wholesale and Smart Infrastructure at Neos Networks said: “Neos Networks and CityFibre have both invested substantially in UK fibre networks over the last ten years, challenging the status quo and developing a strong proposition in the market. This development of our partnership means we can now offer businesses enhanced, self-serve, last-mile capability in more locations than ever before. With business connectivity needs increasing, offering a new network alternative for multi-location businesses can help them on the path to recovery.”

Andrew Wilson, Head of Wholesale at CityFibre said: “The CityFibre network is expanding rapidly and the extended partnership with Neos Networks helps to meet increased demand, providing all-important choice in the market. As a renowned disrupter in the market, establishing partnerships such as these helps us to offer our customers the best network experience possible. This relationship is a perfect fit due to our companies’ like-minded approach to tackling UK connectivity challenges and the vision towards improving the digital future of Britain.”

Neos Networks midway through full-fibre network project in Aberdeenshire, bringing further 71 public sector sites online

  • Neos Networks

Segment three of the region-wide connectivity project has been completed on budget and on time despite challenges of the pandemic

London, UK, 14 July 2021:

Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading connectivity providers, has announced the completion of segment three of the project to bring a full-fibre network to Aberdeenshire.

The partnership between Neos Networks, Aberdeenshire Council, Aberdeen City Council and NHS Grampian, under the Aberdeen City Region Deal, to bring full-fibre connectivity to the region was announced in May 2020, to boost economic activity, quality of life and improve the delivery of public services.

A year on, Neos Networks is proud to announce that substantial progress has been made on the project, helping to better enable and connect a traditionally hard to reach region to telecoms infrastructure. The latest segment of the project saw an additional 29 public sector sites connected. This takes the total number of public sector sites upgraded by the project to 93.

To bring this total of 93 sites online, 153km of new underground fibre cable has been laid so far, heading towards the target of 275km. The public sector locations benefitting from the most recent deployment have spanned hospitals, schools, libraries and leisure sites, including:

  • Mackie Academy
  • Portlethen Academy
  • Newtonhill Library
  • Kincardine Community Hospital
  • Stonehaven Medical Centre
  • Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool

As the Covid-19 vaccination programme got underway during segment three, it was important that the project did not disrupt the UK’s vaccination effort. As a result, the team reprioritised the schedule and accelerated delivery plans on a corporate building intended for use as vaccination centre. By prioritising the laying of fibre in this location, Neos Networks completed it early and ensured that it could be used as operational vaccination centre without disruption – an impressive feat, given the pandemic restrictions and the severe weather conditions in Aberdeenshire over the period.

Reaching this midway point is a significant milestone for the local area connectivity project, supporting the creation of new businesses, jobs and growing existing ones; increasing productivity; attracting further investment; and facilitating remote working.

Through this project, Neos Networks has also been adding social value to the Aberdeenshire community in multiple ways – including supporting five apprenticeships on the project and five structured work placements, each lasting five days a week over eight weeks. Further community outreach includes five facilitated professional courses for the programme team to upskill the workforce, and 100 hours of staff time working with community organisations, including helping digitally isolated individuals gain access to devices.

Neos Networks is proud to have received a Net Promoter Score of +80 from the customer on the delivery of the project thus far. Segment four is now underway, and due for completion by September 2021. Furthermore, the whole project to underpin the digital ambitions of Scotland and connect 190 public sites is on track to be fully completed in March 2022, bringing best-in-class customer service as well as next-generation connectivity to the region.

Lorna Ormiston, Programme Director for Neos Networks, said: “We’re excited and pleased with the significant and timely progress we are making on the Aberdeenshire full fibre network project, helping to underpin Scotland’s digital ambitions and boost economic activity in the area.

I’m very proud of the Aberdeenshire team to have made such substantial progress this year, despite challenging circumstances, including flooding in February after heavy rain and snow. We are well on track to complete the rest of the project on time and on budget despite all work having been completed during the pandemic.”

Joanne Green, Head of Public Sector and Transport at Neos Networks, said: “The experience working alongside Aberdeenshire has been particularly exciting for Neos Networks, and we’re pleased to see the progress being made so far. As we continue to develop our network, we’ll be looking to replicate our knowledge and learnings from this project across the wider UK market.”

Cllr Andy Kille, Leader of Aberdeenshire Council and Chair of the Aberdeen City Region Deal Joint Committee (ACRD), said: “The continued roll out of fibre across Aberdeenshire is tremendously welcome, both from the perspective of the City Region Deal ambitions but also as a tangible benefit for Aberdeenshire. Connectivity and access to online services is in line with the ambitions in the Council Digital Strategy and is a fundamental part of the aims of the ACRD. It is reassuring to see that the project is on track for completion next year, despite recent challenges.”

Cllr Jenny Laing, Leader of Aberdeen City Council, said: “I am delighted that things are progressing so well with the full fibre project. Not only are our corporate sites now able to connect to gigabit speed connectivity but the additional community benefits provided by Neos Networks have been exceptional. Improving connectivity in our city is essential to making our region more attractive, helping people to work from home as well as keep families and friends well connected. The full fibre project is key in helping to drive regional economic growth.”

Iain Stewart, UK Government Minister for Scotland, said: “The past year has shown how essential fast and secure internet connections are for our public services. From hospitals to schools, 93 public buildings in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire are now benefitting from full fibre connectivity thanks to the City Region Deal.

The UK Government is investing more than £1.5 billion into City Region and Growth Deals across Scotland, helping communities to build back better from the pandemic.”

Kate Forbes, Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Finance and the Economy, said: “I’m very pleased to see the progress that’s been made in the roll-out of the Full Fibre Infrastructure Project, improving the connectivity that is required by so many vital local public services, including a temporary vaccination centre, playing a key community role in our nationwide response to the pandemic.

The Scottish Government is contributing £125 million over ten years to the Aberdeen City Region Deal, supporting the region’s economic recovery by creating jobs and providing the commercial infrastructure to support and attract businesses to Aberdeen and the surrounding areas. We are also investing an additional £254 million over the same time period to facilitate a more significant boost to the economy of the North East and contributing significantly to this project.”

Better business connectivity: Neos Networks unbundles further 201 exchanges across the UK, on track for 550 by end of year

  • Neos Networks
Edge, Ethernet

Network enhancement across South Wales, North East England and Scotland will further complement the UK Telco’s existing expansive footprint and bring connectivity services of up to 100Gbps to more businesses across the nation

LONDON, UK, 8th June 2021:

Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading connectivity providers, today announces the unbundling of a further 201 exchanges. This is part of the UK telco’s rapid expansion programme to have 550 exchanges on-net by the end of the year with capacities of up to 10Gbps and 100Gbps.

The exchange unbundling, which is taking place across the length and breadth of the nation; from the South of Wales to the North East of England and into and around Scotland, will help organisations future-proof their digital ambitions as the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic passes.

The UK telco has already built a substantial network across the UK, designed to improve and enhance the connectivity requirements of enterprise and public sector organisations, as well as enable wholesalers, network operators and ISPs to take advantage of existing infrastructure, rather than invest capital into their own build programmes. Known for its quality of service and high NPS scores, the UK telco has become a premier partner for UK organisations looking for high speed, high capacity connectivity, and the building of these exchanges is set to further expand its footprint.

So far, 409 exchanges have been unbundled, growing the telco’s network to 24,480km. The end goal of having 550 exchanges up and running by the end of the year is on track, with each exchange being built resiliently and set to deliver capacities of 100Gbps.

Since September 2020 201 new exchanges are available, with the telco having drawn on its 20 years of industry knowledge and experience to keep the project running on time despite the difficulties and complexities brought about by the pandemic.

As the UK government looks to future-proof the nation’s digital ambitions, with 85% of premises promised access to fibre connectivity by 2025, the exchange rollout and expansion programme will be crucial in helping organisations to deliver the connectivity services that help achieve this goal.

Neos Networks is perfectly placed to support the backhaul requirements of large organisations as well as emerging ALTNETs, having most recently announced a partnership with broadband provider toob. This partnership will support the emerging telco’s connectivity offerings across South of England, and is part of the UK telcos wider programme of partnering with like-minded businesses to help future-proof the UK’s digital future.

All exchanges will be available via Neos Networks’ customer portal LIVEQUOTE, which provides quoting, ordering, and price comparison capabilities via its own network and those of leading thirds parties. The announcement comes at an exciting time for Neos Networks, which has recently launched its new EoFTTx solution.

By the end of this year the telco will have a network spanning over 30,000km in size, one of the largest high capacity business Ethernet networks in the UK, as well as a footprint of 90 data centres and over 800 points of presence (PoPs).

Speaking in reaction to today’s announcement, Colin Sempill, CEO, Neos Networks said

“As the government looks to achieve better fibre connectivity across the country, projects such as our edge expansion rollout are critical in helping organisations make this a reality.

“We’ve been regularly keeping the market updated with our progress in terms of the number of exchanges unbundled and are delighted to announce this further 201, especially as we’ve been able to complete these on schedule despite the testing environment of the pandemic. Showing our continued commitment to support customers with best in class connectivity.”

LONDON, UK, May 6 2020 Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading connectivity providers, today announces that it has been awarded a £10.5m full fibre project by Aberdeenshire Council, spanning up to 200km, with the aim of improving the delivery of public services to the community and boosting economic activity and quality of life in the area. This latest collaboration is a continuation of a 20-year-strong partnership between the two parties.

The project comes under the banner of the Aberdeen City Region Deal (ACRD). It is part of a funding allocation designed to improving the region’s digital infrastructure, key to the long-term future of the local economy. Funding from the Aberdeen City Region Deal provides the opportunity to create a sustainable digital infrastructure from which the region can transform into a world-class digital area.  At the core is the need to deliver ultrafast connectivity and to use this to: deliver excellent public services; grow existing businesses; attract further investment; create new businesses; support mobility; protect the environment; and enhance the area’s attractiveness as a place to live and work.

The 18-month project is being delivered by Neos Networks combining its existing extensive fibre network with Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) to create a new Dark Fibre network, allowing for quicker delivery and realisation of economic and social benefits in the area.

The project will provide gigabit dark fibre out to public sector locations such as schools and NHS sites in a number of towns in a belt around Aberdeen City. Aberdeenshire Council, Aberdeen City Council and NHS Grampian will benefit directly as the users of the fibre to deliver services and improve efficiency. In addition, Neos Networks will further invest in the infrastructure and offer capacity and services to mobile operators and internet service providers. This will increase service availability and speeds for residents and businesses in Aberdeenshire. It will also ensure that the region is fit for the 21st century, and will complement the existing gigabit fibre offer in the city.

The end-to-end full fibre network will initially connect 189 public sector sites across the region. Aberdeenshire residents will benefit from limited disruption with Neos Networks using 43km of its existing dark fibre network to reduce the amount of construction during implementation. This will then be supplemented with 130km of new Dark Fibre network that will be created to maximise the number of premises served for the budget.

This optimum use of existing and new fibre pathways allows Neos Networks to reach more locations than a conventional construction project reducing the total construction requirement by around 80%.

Public Sector Director at Neos Networks, Martin Samuel said: “Improving the region’s digital infrastructure is key to the long-term sustainable future of the local economy. This collaborative partnership is about maximising Aberdeenshire Council’s resources and providing the best value for money possible.

Our shareholder SSE plc’s employer ranking of first in Scottish Business Insider’s Top500 Index 2019 means we are committed to supporting Scotland’s economic growth for the long-term. In greenlighting this initiative, Aberdeenshire Council is investing for success, not just for now, but for the next 25 years. This access to full fibre connectivity will help to reduce inequalities and level the playing field for economic, environmental and social progress for Aberdeen and surrounding areas.

Until now, many local residents and businesses have relied solely on the incumbent to meet their connectivity needs. We’re delighted that this new, gigabit-capable network will offer another option in the region, benefitting the community for years to come.”

Jim Gifford is the chair of the Aberdeen City Region Deal Joint Committee, and leader of Aberdeenshire Council. He said: “The digital elements of our City Region Deal are among the most important, in terms of helping businesses and communities see a demonstrable change thanks to the Deal. The ACRD remains about being progressive, delivering tangible benefits and laying out a road map for the future to ensure the ongoing stability of our region. We can all agree that in the current circumstances that is almost more important than ever.

My thanks to the teams who have worked in partnership with Neos Networks, the NHS and the other Deal partners to sign and agree this important milestone. I look forward to seeing the benefits being delivered for both the public sector and those companies or communities who access this network.”

UK Government Minister, Douglas Ross said: “The coronavirus pandemic has reinforced how critical digital infrastructure is to everyday life and businesses across the country, so I’m pleased the UK Government is able to support this rollout of full fibre connectivity to communities as part of its £125 million Aberdeen City Region Deal investment.

The UK Government has committed over £1.4 billion to city and growth deals across Scotland, promoting opportunities, creating jobs and attracting further investment.”

Michael Matheson, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity said: “The Scottish Government is investing £125 million in the Aberdeen City Region Deal to deliver inclusive economic growth to the North East. Establishing new digital infrastructure is a key facet of this and I’m pleased to see this exciting project take another step forward.

The deal, which was signed in 2016 under different circumstances, will now be even more crucial to the recovery of the region’s economy following the Covid-19 pandemic, and complements our commitment to deliver superfast broadband access to every home and business in the country through the R100 programme.”

“Improving the region’s digital infrastructure is key to the long-term sustainable future of the local economy. This collaborative partnership is about maximising Aberdeenshire Council’s resources and providing the best value for money possible. Until now, many local residents and businesses have relied solely on the incumbent to meet their connectivity needs. We’re delighted that this new, gigabit-capable network will offer another option in the region, benefitting the community for years to come.”

toob to utilise Neos Networks’ extensive UK fibre network to deliver reliable broadband services

LONDON, UK, 5 May 2021 Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading connectivity providers, today formerly announces a partnership with broadband provider toob, supporting the emerging telco’s connectivity offerings across the South of England.

The partnership, which originated in June 2020 with the signing of a 20-year contract, will enable toob to utilise existing Neos Networks subducts to deploy its network. This will help toob to expand its network footprint to provide customers with its full fibre broadband connectivity.

The two telcos have been working closely over the past year to deploy a connectivity project across Southampton. A new project across Camberley and Farnborough, Surrey is set to commence rollout later this year.

Through utilising Neos Networks’ pre-existing infrastructure, toob will avoid the need to commence costly, time-consuming digs that are disruptive to local residents. This will enhance deployment speeds, keep costs down and is a more environmentally conscious decision.

The relationship supports toob’s Southampton network to deliver service to more than 100,000 premises, with the new network in the Surrey towns of Camberley, Farnborough, Ash and Aldershot delivering service to a further 100,000 premises.

The partnership is part of larger efforts to help drive the UK’s connectivity ambitions and futureproof the South of England by expanding regional connectivity opportunities. The rise of Alternative Network Providers (Altnets) is a key part of this, offering impressive and competitive connectivity alternatives versus the major UK network providers.

The announcement of the partnership comes as Neos Networks continues its own substantial network expansion programme, which will see the trusted UK telco grow its fibre network to over 30,000km by the end of 2021. The business is also significantly developing its exchange footprint with over 550 exchanges on-net by the end of the year.

Joanne Green, SD for Public Sector and Transport at Neos Networks said: “We are delighted to be a trusted partner for toob, an emerging UK telco with ambitious growth plans. This is a great collaborative relationship and a clear example of how Neos Networks is committed to supporting rapid network expansion that aids the futureproofing of the UK’s digital economy. These Hampshire and Surrey regions in the South of England, often overlooked compared to popular urban districts, will benefit hugely from the partnership.”

Nick Parbutt, CEO at toob said: “toob is rapidly expanding its network to allow consumers and small businesses to fully benefit from the advantages of full fibre supported by Neos Networks infrastructure.  The partnership with Neos Networks will be a significant help in our drive to deliver a network to more than one million premises over the next six years.  This is an exciting time for the telecoms industry, and we are delighted to be working with partners such as Neos Networks to deliver the infrastructure the country needs.”

LONDON, UK, 31 MARCH 2021 SSE Enterprise Telecoms, one of the UK’s leading infrastructure-based connectivity providers, today announces the launch of its new brand. Coinciding with the start of a new financial year, the company will now be known as Neos Networks.

The rebrand is part of the company’s wider business transformation journey, which began in 2019 when Infracapital acquired 50% of the business with SSE Group retaining 50%. With ambitions to further consolidate the company’s position as the premier B2B connectivity partner across the UK, the rebrand to Neos Networks gives the company a clearer, more recognisable and relevant long-term identity in the telecoms market – independent from both of its investors.

Neos Networks, meaning “new network”, was the company’s trading name prior to its acquisition by SSE Group in 2003.  It is still widely recognised and holds a great deal of positive association within the telecoms industry. Alongside the new logo, representing the continuous connection between Neos Networks and its customers, the rebrand embodies the company’s vision to continue developing a new network, purpose built for the specific high capacity, high resilience needs of UK businesses. Neos Networks remains committed to providing superior delivery, outstanding customer experience, commercial innovation and technical excellence.

As part of the rebrand, Neos Networks has also updated its company values to ensure employees are aligned in a spirit of collaboration, partnership and integrity. Recently launched, these principles reflect Neos Networks’ employees’ aspirations and commitments in relation to ambition, simplicity, service, expertise, teamwork and safety. They empower Neos Networks’ employees to realise their full potential and deliver on the company’s wider goals to grow its network and ensure superior customer experience is recognised across UK businesses.

Colin Sempill, CEO at Neos Networks, said: “Our new name, Neos Networks, embodies our mission to build a new network for UK businesses that has the specific high capacity, high resilience that they demand.

“As capacity requirements continually increase for businesses, there is a growing need for a new network solution to meet current and future demand, delivering much needed high bandwidth, high resilience services across the UK and Neos Networks will continue to deliver that network.

With decades of experience and a relentless focus on customer experience our customers – many of whom are responsible for the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure – will benefit from one of the fastest growing high capacity networks in the UK – and we’ll continue to expand it in the months and years ahead.”

Vicky Bori, HR Director at Neos Networks, said: “Employees want to feel connected to the organisation they work for and its culture, which is why it was important to us to ensure everyone at Neos Networks can identify with the new brand at a personal as well as a professional level. This has meant reshaping our company values and purpose, to mirror the ways of working that truly drive us.

Our new company values are a core pillar of Neos Networks. They will play a key role in reinforcing the company’s positioning as an independent and agile telecoms infrastructure business, built around a strong pool of industry experts, intent on seeking out new opportunities, continually developing our knowledge and capabilities, and consistently exceeding customer expectations.”

Neos Networks wins contract to provide connectivity services for Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm

  • Neos Networks

The £3bn Seagreen project is due for completion in the North Sea in 2022/23 and will be one of the UK’s largest sources of renewable energy, powering over a million homes.

LONDON, UK, 19th January 2021 Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading connectivity providers, has today announced it will provide the communications infrastructure for what will be Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm.

Once complete in 2022/23, Seagreen offshore windfarm will be capable of generating 1075MW from its 114 North Sea turbines – enough to power 40% of all Scottish homes. A joint venture partnership between SSE Renewables and Total is investing £3bn into the project, with onshore construction already underway and offshore construction due to get underway later this year.

Having been selected to spearhead the project following a competitive tender process, Neos Networks will be responsible for the installation of a comprehensive Wide Area Network (WAN) between the substation at Tealing, Dundee, and the operations centre in Montrose. The connection will provide offshore wind farm engineers based at Montrose with the visibility of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and technical equipment at Tealing needed to manage the distribution of power to the substation. This will maximise the operational efficiency of Seagreen and help it remain compliant from regulatory and health and safety perspectives.

The role of Neos Networks will be to facilitate the flow of data between the offshore wind farm’s planned substation and onshore operations centre, to allow for crucial data analysis. By enabling the transfer of data between on and off-shore sites, the UK telco will be providing access to important insights into power, temperature and energy trends.

Today’s announcement forms part of Neos Networks’ significant network expansion programme. The UK telco is committed to supporting the roll-out of business connectivity projects that will help futureproof the country and drive the nation’s digital ambitions.

Paul Clark, SSE Relationship Director at Neos Networks, said having reliable connectivity was essential to help support the smooth running of such a large-scale windfarm:

“Telecoms infrastructure companies like ours play a vital role in keeping businesses connected and their operations functioning properly. Given the complexity of this project, our vast experience in developing critical infrastructure projects will be essential. We’re also able to bring our expertise gained from other renewables projects to bear, as well as our access to cutting edge technologies.

“We have already delivered logistical support on 19 wind farms within SSE Group’s portfolio, so we look forward to supporting efforts to get Seagreen up and running. We are also proud to support the overall Seagreen offshore wind farm project which will play a huge role in helping the UK meet its Net Zero targets as well as provide an estimated £1bn boost to the nation’s economy.”

Mick McCaffery, Seagreen Systems Project Manager, added the experience of Neos Networks in servicing complex offshore renewables sites made it the best fit for Seagreen:

“Neos Networks has a strong pedigree in delivering wind farm network infrastructure and a comprehensive understanding of the consequences, should a wind farm become un-operational. As such, we are confident they will bring the necessary experience and expertise to deliver a solution that will help prevent such a scenario. We’re pleased to have a partner of this calibre on board, which will undoubtedly be to the benefit of the region and the country at large.

“The UK needs to be generating 40GW of offshore wind power by 2030 to contribute toward Net Zero targets, so projects with the scale and ambition of Seagreen will be vital components of that low carbon vision.”

Ethernet network will be deployed to support Telent’s delivery of a new fibre-based network to ensure 165 of the HM Coastguard’s remote radio locations are connected 24/7, 365 days a year, helping to keep the public safe at sea

LONDON, UK, 12 January 2021 Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading connectivity providers, today announces a partnership with Telent, a leading UK technology and network services company, to keep the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s (MCA) remote radio sites connected to support the public’s safety at sea.

Operating remote sites across the length and breadth of the UK, the MCA is in charge of public safety around the nation’s coastline and out at sea. The organisation’s most recent annual report reveals that the coastguard responded to over 31,000 incidents of distress and 999 calls in the last year showing its critical importance. However, with many of its coastguard radio sites located in remote, hard to access locations, finding appropriate network services that would ensure always available connectivity posed a challenge.

The project will see Neos Networks connect four data centres and utilise its existing expansive footprint to deploy a resilient Ethernet network directly into 165 of the MCA’s remote radio sites located around the UK coastline, supporting Telent to keep them online 24/7, 365 days a year.

Specialists in the design, deployment and management of key parts of the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure, Neos Networks and Telent have both become trusted partners for some of the UK’s most critical industries as well as blue light services.

The announcement comes during a period of significant network expansion for Neos Networks, with the company having recently announced plans to double their network reach, with over 550 BT exchanges due to be unbundled and over 30,000km of fibre network available by the end of 2021. Today’s partnership news further complements this expansion programme.

Joanne Green, Sales Director for Public Sector and Transport at Neos Networks, said: “Neos Networks has become a trusted voice in managing and deploying Critical National Infrastructure for some of the UK’s most vital organisations. Today’s announcement with Telent is a further example of this trust, and a testament to the work our deployment and management teams do on a daily basis to keep customer networks resilient and secure.

“As we continue to embark on a period of rapid growth and expansion, partnering with like-minded businesses such as Telent will be key in bringing high capacity, highly resilient services to more UK organisations, keeping our critical infrastructure safe and futureproofing the UK’s digital ambitions as a result.”

Peter Moir, Managing Director of Network Services at Telent, said: “At Telent, we pride ourselves on being at the heart of critical digital infrastructure. With a deep understanding of the blue light sector, in addition to our experience in delivering critical communications networks, we’re pleased to partner with Neos Networks to support the MCA with always-on, best-in-class connectivity.

The demands of a 24-hour search and rescue team means that downtime is never an option.  By being at the forefront of technology deployment, together we will ensure that the new network delivers performance and reliability, so we can support the important lifesaving work of HM Coastguard. Neos Networks is the perfect partner to ensure we’re able to deliver an efficient and reliable solution to help keep the public safe at sea.”

Scotland’s digital infrastructure boosted with next generation connectivity from Neos Networks

  • Neos Networks

High capacity 100Gbps connectivity services delivered into DataVita data centre set to futureproof Scotland’s businesses and public sector organisations

LONDON, UK, 17 December 2020 Neos Networks, one of the UK’s leading connectivity providers, today announces that Scotland’s digital capabilities have received a significant boost with the delivery of critical, high capacity network infrastructure into the DataVita data centre, Scotland’s only purpose-built hyper-secure tier 3 facility.

As a provider of diverse connectivity directly into DataVita, Neos Networks is able to offer separate routes for the network into the data centre and public infrastructure, to maximise bandwidth, minimise latency and deliver optimum service levels. The project will help deliver speeds of 100 gigabytes per second (Gbps) to Scottish businesses and public sector organisations, enabling them to benefit from the next generation of high speed connectivity.

With its new network infrastructure, the DataVita data centre will support the deployment of 5G networks, which will underpin the roll out and adoption of technologies such as Cloud, the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). And with the connectivity provider’s UK-wide network, Scotland’s businesses will no longer have the region’s connectivity limited by geographical constraints. Better access to these digital services will particularly support the manufacturing, finance, and public sectors, as well as the Scottish economy.

Managing Director, Wholesale at Neos Networks, Sarah Mills, said: “Increasingly, we’re seeing social impact as the driving force behind enterprise connectivity. This is not merely a functional deployment to keep businesses ticking along, but a project that will help to drive Scotland’s digital economy and open up new possibilities for the public.

The importance of digital has been highlighted of late. Our reliance on connectivity is rising greatly. If we are to futureproof Scotland’s economy, it’s critical that the infrastructure to support 5G and IoT is in place. We cannot afford to let connectivity be the obstacle for the great companies and institutions we rely upon, when they strive for better.”

Danny Quinn, Managing Director at DataVita, added: “Digital connectivity has never been more important, given the situation we find ourselves in today. The addition of this infrastructure is a substantial upgrade to what we have available in Scotland and will support continued working from home and the development of new industries that rely on access to high levels of connectivity, as well as helping to underpin the greater adoption of technologies and trends such as IoT and smart cities.”

The new infrastructure directly connects DataVita to Neos Networks’ more than 20,000km UK-wide network. As a result, Scotland’s businesses will have easy access to next generation connectivity and Service Providers and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) will have access to a more expansive network when rolling out connectivity and 5G services.

Neos Networks designed and managed the entire 100Gbps connectivity project, from design stage to full data deployment.”

James King, Chairman of Host in Scotland, a Scottish Futures Trust initiative to represent and promote the interests of the Scottish data centre sector industry said: “We welcome this important development in strengthening connectivity and capacity in Scotland, and the investment by Neos Networks into DataVita demonstrates the capability of Scottish data centres to satisfy ever-growing demand for digital services. The ability for Scottish-based providers to attract and deliver high quality, secure, low carbon data storage is of critical importance to the growth of this sector and of the economy, and we are keen to work with others to further develop this space.”
